You might have come across blogs that stated only 3 types of SEO but in this article I have covered one of the most important types of SEO.
After reading this article you will be well equipped with the basics and one of the most important types of SEO you need to know.
What is SEO?
Search Engine Optimization is the practise of optimizing any webpage or article to increase its relevance, authority and User Signals.
- Relevancy: Your content should be relevant to searcher’s intent
- Authority: By solving your customers problems, you will build authority in your niche
- User Signals: User signals indicate how visitors are engaging with your content. Use Signals can be determined by metrics such as CTR(Click Through Rate), Bounce Rate, Exit Rate etc.
Why is SEO important for your online success?
Search engine Optimization will help you to match the searcher’s intent. That means, SEO with the right tools and methods will help you to create content that people are searching.
Search Engine Optimization is a demand fulfillment platform that means you are trying to solve the visitors problem to the best extent. There is no use in creating content that people are not searching for.
Hence Search Engine Optimization will help in understanding what your customers are searching for, what their problems are, and how to solve them in the best possible manner. Hence SEO is important for your online success.
Types of SEO:
You might have come across blogs that stated about only 3 types of SEO but they are missing out on an import aspect of SEO that cannot be neglected and that is
1. Keyword Research and why it is important?
Let us understand what is a keyword: Keyword is any word or phrase or sentence that a visitor enters on google while searching for a product or information.
Keyword in Search Engine are also called as Search Queries
Keyword Research lays a basic foundation to SEO.
Keyword Research is the process of identifying the keywords or queries that a visitor is searching for and also understanding the reason or intent behind that query.
I would like to divide keyword research into 4 basic types:
As the name says seed keyword is a parent topic of a keyword and it is very broad in nature.
Example: For a short tail keyword “Digital Marketing” seed keyword can be “Marketing”
Short Tail Keyword:
Short Tail keywords consist of 3 words maximum. Short Tail keywords are broad in nature and it is difficult to understand the search intent also very hard to rank as a beginner
What is Long Tail Keyword:
Long Tail Keywords are those that contain more than 3 words in them. Long Tail keywords target a specific niche and long tail keywords have high purchase intent with low search volume.
Example: Unflavoured Whey Protein Supplement for Muscle Building.
What is LSI Keyword:
LSI keyword is abbreviated as Latent Semantic Index. LSI Keywords refer to synonyms of a particular keyword.
For Example, Let us consider a long tail keyword “House for rent in Bangalore” and LSI keyword would be home for rent in Bangalore. In this example house and home are synonyms of each other and by optimizing your keywords will help you to rank for synonyms of your keywords.
Bonus Tips to do keyword research.
If you are just starting off with SEO then this would help you a lot.
As a beginner never go for too broad a topic because there is a lot of competition out there. If you try to rank for broad keywords that have thousands of search volume in a day you will never be able to rank.
Here is a hack, try to narrow it down as narrow as possible where you have a search volume of 40-100 and find out the secondary and LSI keywords that associate with your content.
By following this step you will be able to solve the problem of a niche market at the beginning of their buying journey.
2. On Page SEO and why it is important.
On Page SEO is the process of Optimizing your webpage or an article to rank better for a particular group of keywords.
Following are some of the elements of On-Page SEO
Title should always be wrapped up in H1 Header
Title is one of the most important aspects in On-Page SEO because your Title decides what your topic is and Title is the main thing that differentiates it from other similar webpages.
How to optimise title for SEO:
Title should consist of your Primary Keyword, by adding a primary keyword to your title search engines will identify your content as the most relevant to the user query.
Studies have shown that the more relevant your Title is the better your chances of getting ranked
Meta Description is a Description or short summary of your blog article. Google Doesn’t consider Meta Description as a ranking factor but a good meta description will increase your CTR (Click Through Rate).
Sub-headings are nothing but subtopics of your main topic. Sub headings are a very important part of on page seo. Having Sub-headings Will give better readability and user experience.
Without subheadings your content will look unorganized and confusing to the users.
Make sure you will wrap your subheadings in the H2 title.
Subheading can go upto any number such H2, H3, H4 etc and it depends on the depth of your topic.
Keyword Density is the number of times your keyword is present in the content. If you keep on adding keywords it would cause keyword density and google might penalise you.
If your content consist of less number of primary keyword then your blog or article might not rank better
Use External Links
External Links will help you to increase the quality and authority of your website and rank better. Hence adding external links through anchor text will be a better On-Page-SEO
Optimize your urls for SEO.
Optimizing URLs means you will be changing your URL slug to your primary keyword or some keywords related to your topic. But do not keep them too long.
3. What is Off-Page SEO and what are the important elements?
Off-Page SEO is a tactic where you will try to increase your website’s authority by using external sources.
Most of the people think Off Page is just restricted link Building but it’s beyond that.
We will discuss some of the offpage tactics you can implement.
Link building is one of the major aspects in Off Page SEO.
Link Building is linking other people’s websites to your website. Whenever you link to a higher authority website, the authority will pass to your website if they wish to link to you.
A good link building strategy can increase your ranking significantly. Link Building has become commercial and people exchange links for money and it’s against google’s webmaster guideline. If you exchange links for money then you might have to face a penalty.
In guest posting you will be writing content for other websites or journals or publications. Through guest posting you can ask the Publication or Journal to link back to your website. It’s always good to engage and write for good and authoritative publications and if they link back to your blog or website.
Imagine you saw an amazing post on google and even you have a similar blog with quality content backed by solid research. Email Outreach will be the most effective method to reach the website owner and tell him that you have a similar blog and ask him to link back to you.
Social Media Marketing
Social Media can boost your ranking when you have more mentions about your brand or on social media platforms. But Social Media does not have direct impact on boosting your website ranking but it will impact in your Local SEO
Positive Reviews provide more credibility to your brand. It’s always important to inform your customers to leave reviews about your products and services. Hence these factors will lead to better ranking of your website and reviews also increase your conversion and CTR.
When you are dealing with local or regional products and services LOCAL SEO will help you to stand out from the competition and boost your organic ranking. LOCAL SEO can be done by registering your business in Google My Business (GMB) where you need to provide details that attract your customers such as Working Hours, Services and Products, and reviews.
4. What is Technical SEO
Crawling refers to a process where search engines or other crawlers will crawl your website, discover new information and add them to their database. If crawlers cannot crawl your website there is no use of quality content and links
Important aspects of Technical SEO.
Site structure determines your structure of the website and how your webpages are organised and linked to each other. Good Site structure will help search engines to crawl your website effectively. Bad site structure will be hard to crawl and give a bad user experience to the users.
Site Structure will be present in /Sitemap.XML format.
Robots.txt file helps in communicating with search engines about the pages you want to crawl and pages you don’t want to crawl. You need to block unwanted pages so that search engines will not lose their crawl energy or budget on them rather than crawl on most important webpages.
You can access your robots.txt file by entering /robots.txt preceded by the website URL
404 Errors indicate that a certain page in your website is missing or removed. You need to check the urls that are affected by these errors and fix them as soon as possible
301 and 302 Redirects
301 means that a particular URL or webpage is moved to a different location permanently and 302 redirects states that a web page or URL is moved to a different location temporarily.
By running a site audit you can check these technical errors in your website and take actions accordingly. An error free website will give better user experience and improve rankings.
